'Ask Matty' For July 1st, 2013 - Your Questions Answered

Mattycollector logo

We received our questions back from Scott Neitlich “Toyguru,” Mattel’s Marketing Manager for all toy lines sold on Mattycollector.com. We want to thank Scott once again for taking the time to answer these questions!

These questions were suppose to be sent to us on June 17th, but Mattel had missed them. So they sent them to us on July 1st along with other website’s questions.

Q: Greetings Matty:

Gizmodo’s article “Where Toys Come From” (4/22/13) confirmed what many 3.75 inch figure fans suspect. A new 6 inch figure line for a recent “iron” threequel comic movie; appears 3D printed and scanned from its previous old sequel 3.75 inch line.

Can you do the same?

Whereas 3D printing and scanning (old 6 inch figures) can make new 3.75 inch lines? Many collectors buy only 3.75 inches; G.I.Joe, other Comic lines, and Star Wars. Millions of fans would just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE MoTU and DCUC if only they fit our 3.75” universe.

Toyguru: This is something we have looked into butno plans to announce anything speicfic right now! It is a cool concept for collectables.

Q: The armor for Sherrilyn of the Fighting Foe Men was said to be very difficult to be put back on if taken off. Now the armor apparently does not come off. Was this a design choice by Mattel or an accident at the factory?

Toyguru: Because of how difficult it was to put back on we made  it non removable.

Q: Has Mattel ever considered including a Connect & Connect in 3 – 4 inch scale (similar to Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Build-A-Figures this year) and include pieces with DC Club Infinite Earths figures? Perhaps two C&C’s a year and character choices could be Ventriloquist and Green Lantern (or Alpha Lantern) Chaselon? Is this something Mattel would consider providing that 2014 Subscriptions hit the second tier?

Toyguru: It is a cool idea and we are always looking for ways to get more value to our customers and fans. Nothing to announce right now but you never know!

Q: The current prices for the MOTUC and DCU Club subscriptions will they stay the same per figure in 2014?

Toyguru: MOTUC will stay at 25.00 for sub holders and 27.00 for day of (for basic figs) DCU CIE will go to 20.00 for sub holders and 23.00 for day of. The fewer units of an item we do, the more it costs to make.

Q: Your article with AFI revealed why you chose to do a New 52 character as the DC exclusive for SDCC this year. But there are a lot of fans that collect Classics that are feeling left out. Would it be possible for you to offer two DC exclusives next year? One New 52 and one in Classics style? Even if it’s the same character and possibly as a two pack?

Toyguru: There is a new Classic DC character available every month from CIE. It is hard to make something special for SDCC when you get pretty much the equivalent of a SDCC type character every month now. For example,  Huntress might have been a great SDCC fig, as would Freddy Freeman, Wally West, or any number of our 2013 club figures. Now instead of only getting one collector focused figure a year a SDCC you get 12, one every month! Doing a “New 52” 6” figure at SDCC was a  way  of offering something different over what was offered every month now.
